Il digital curator

Maria Cassella

Abstract

Digital curation is an emerging challenging activity for information professionals: librarians, archivists, and museum specialists. Librarians are best positioned to perform digital curation provided they are adequately educated and trained. The article focuses on the definition of digital curation and on its conceptual boundaries. It deals with the challenges and the opportunities to train digital curators in Europe and in Italy. One problem in defining a digital curators curriculum is the lack of a referring conceptual framework. The European project DigCurV (2011-2013) funded by the European Commission’s Leonardo da Vinci programme aims to establish a curriculum framework for vocational training in digital curation. The article also discusses some preliminary outputs of the DigCurV project.
