Abstract

The article illustrates the characteristics of the Sistema bibliotecario Nazionale (SBN) whose management is currently entrusted to the Istituto per il catalogo unico delle biblioteche italiane e per le informazioni bibliografiche (ICCU) and which groups about one third of the over 18,000 Italian libraries. After having analyzed the variety of bibliographic records, assessed their quality, that of the catalog and of the services provided, he proposes a re-foundation of SBN by the university library services, following the example of what has already been done by nine southern universities with Share Catalogue.
