Abstract
L'articolo ripercorre la storia della Biblioteca Storica del Politecnico di Milano, dalla nascita del progetto fino alla sua inaugurazione il 26 marzo 2018, delineando le sue attività e i suoi servizi insieme alle iniziative culturali e di terza missione organizzate per promuovere questo affascinante luogo. Parallelamente, viene illustrata la storia della Sala Ciliegio, oggi simbolo della Biblioteca Storica, che nel 1927 ospitava la biblioteca dell'Istituto di Chimica Generale, il cui contesto storico e scientifico fin dai primi anni della sua fondazione viene qui ricostruito. La Biblioteca Storica può essere considerata doppiamente rappresentativa dell'identità del Politecnico, in quanto non solo raccoglie la più antica e preziosa collezione libraria dell'Università, ma conserva e valorizza anche la memoria dei fondatori, testimoniando l'evoluzione di un'istituzione capace di attingere ai valori del passato, come l'approccio pragmatico per la "costruzione del progresso", per progettare il futuro.
English abstract
The article traces the history of the Historical Library of the Polytechnic of Milan, from the birth of the project to its inauguration on March 26, 2018, and outlines its activities and services along with the cultural and third mission initiatives organized to promote this fascinating place. In parallel, it illustrates the history of the Sala Ciliegio (“Cherry Wood Hall”), today the emblem of the Historical Library, which in 1927 housed the library of the Institute of General Chemistry, whose historical and scientific context from the years of its foundation is also reconstructed here. The Historical Library can be considered doubly representative of the identity of the Polytechnic, since it not only collects the oldest and most precious book collection of the University, but also preserves and enhances the memory of the founders, bearing witness to the evolution of an institution capable of drawing on the values of the past, such as the pragmatic approach for the “construction of progress”, to plan the future.
