Abstract


Many new public libraries in the Netherlands show a new approach to their servicing along with a changing social engagement. Books become less central, while people gain importance. A renewed programming underline this change in a variety of forms. Among the possibilities, makerspaces are strongly emerging. This new library also establish alliances with local assets and offers inclusive possibilities to access the ‘knowledge society’ and the ‘knowledge economy’. New forms of alliances lead to cultural poles, like culture houses, in which the local government is a privileged actor and an initiator. Finally these new libraries are above all comfortable and engaging places for the community, excelling public spaces designed as squares, streets, gardens.
