Abstract

In the last few years academic libraries have engaged in the development of services to support research data curation. The services offered by academic libraries in data curation cover the entire cycle of data production and management, including long-term preservation activities. In the start-up phase of the project, libraries may also offer consultancy for the preparation of Data Management Plans (DMP). They work to describe, manage and preserve datasets. Data curation has brought out a new professional role in academic librarians community: the data librarian. In its second part, the article describes the main features of this new professional role; the author proposes a skill framework for the very specific and highly specialized data librarian’s role.
